Blitz Forum Dictionary

good Idea or not,

Basically I thought It would be advantageous to have a reference thread for defining various words, concepts, abbreviations and so on.
To keep it easy to read and to find terms, I suggest we use a standard format such as

Term = definition

I'll start the ball rolling with a couple of basic ones, if you think it would be beneficial please feel free to add to the thread. please remember that not every one will agree on a specific definition, if you post a definition contra to a previous one simply explain that the interpretation is different because.....

RBSD = Reality Based Self Defence; a system of self protection and training methodologies based on the realities of violence as it actually occurs in the real world.

TMA = Traditional Martial Arts; a system of Martial arts perceived to be of "traditional" in nature, including carryover traditions and values from previous practitioners. eg's include Karate, Judo , Ju Jutsu, Kung Fu. usually they are limited to oriental Martial Arts Systems, but has recently been extended to western combat systems that are traditional in nature.

MMA = Mixed Martial Arts; A relatively new system of combat primarily sport oriented, consisting of a mixture of fighting systems. common sub systems include Muay Thai, Bjj, Boxing, Wrestling among others. primarily is a mix of grappling and striking arts to provide proficiency in all ranges of combat. eg UFC. PRIDE, XFC etc

Street = Combat outside of training that is not sporting in nature: it is violence occurring in the real world and is not limited to the actual street. it occurs any where outside of the dojo gym or combat arena. the street is the arena of self defence.

Clinch = Vertical or standing grappling where one or both combatants have hold of the other. The range where clinching occurs.

over to you guys My missus wants a cuddle, now should that be a love clinch.

Is this what you mean Drew?

Common Martial Arts Definitions
TPC (Toilet Paper Certification): - This is when an Instructor gives out certificates faster than toilet paper sheets. Usually handed out so fast that the recipients feel that they are actually achieving something even though all they've done is taken off their shoes at the door. For higher ranks the certificates are quilted for comfort and smell like fresh lavender.

Run-like-fuk-su - common technique used by practitioners when they realise that they can't fight even though they spent years studying their art in a foreign country and thousands of dollars on TPC.

Splakrunch - the sound a practitioner’s nose makes when he fails to properly defend against a real street attack, they then resort to run-like-fuk-su

Time Traveller - someone who leaves home as a shodan and returns from a 2 week holiday overseas as a godan

Promotion Cold - common ailment contracted by Time Travellers, whereby Traveller gains a few dan rankings over the space of a common cold incubation period. Example: “Achooo! Oh, I’m a 5th Dan now…”

Defection Flu - another common ailment usually infecting new black belts, results in shodan abandoning their teacher, stealing as many senior students as he can and opening new dojo.

ShiraShodan - artificially aged black belt, usually washed and then dragged behind a truck to achieve desired look (ie faded and unravelling). A very impressive addition to a uniform for those under 25 years old. Commonly used by Time Travellers after a Promotion Cold and the Defection Flu.

Super Soaker - high pressure/ranking water pistol/person that spouts nonsense about fighting even though they've never been in a fight. Once the water has gone, goes back to the bucket (Hollywood movies) for a refill of new nonsense.

Hara - term used by the Japanese to describe the "seat" of Ki which is commonly thought to reside in the stomach. Used my many older Instructors to explain why they are obese, eg I have a strong ki flow, so I have a big hara...

Used by LEOs - term used by Instructors to promote up-coming seminar - really means that said Instructor once saw a film where a guy performed one of the exact same technique he teaches OR the Instructor has a student who is in the Police.

Has trained Navy Seals - another promotional term, really means they used to work at Sea World and once tried to encourage a marine mammal to balance a ball on its nose in return for a fish. The seal in question was probably not Navy but rather more likely a shade of grey or brown.

TKD - many many years ago used to mean Tae Kwon Do. Now stands for "taking kids dancing".

McDojo - a place where, for $5 an hour, parents can leave their kids with a fat man in a white suit who'll teach them how to wave their arms and legs round in pretty patterns.

Fit boxing/body combat/tae bo - something "career women" do in their lunch hour in the mistaken belief that they can use it to fight off rapists.

Very common

Defection Flu - another common ailment usually infecting new black belts, results in shodan abandoning their teacher, stealing as many senior students as he can and opening new dojo.
I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.

The Romantic - Someone who has seen a few Bruce Lee movies, a little bit of Chuck Norris and wants to learn to fight like a movie star. However, when they realise take a class or two and realise the actual hard work and patience needed to do so, they give up and go back to watching movies.

Very funny how a martial arts forum of which Japanese language features heavily moderates the word sh#t
