Advertising in Martial Arts

Postby juggernaut » Thu Mar 11, 2010 12:01 pm

I just came across this site

http://ppdt.taekwonjitsu.com/

which got me thinking about how martial arts and self defence is often advertised.

The web site in question shows pictures of what appears to be a Police tactical team in full gear with automatic weapons, the image is being used to sell; and I will quote;

"You’ve Just Found The Most Effective & Realistic System For Self Protection That Really Works!"

So its THE most effective system
Its realistic and
and obviously unlike other effective and realistic systems, it really works.

Now keeping in mind that this is an Australian site, and appears to be aimed at civilians, I have a few issues with it.

1. Yes an Automatic assault rifle is an excellent deterrent to being mugged on the street, but Australia doesnt let its citizens walk around with weapons of this kind, or any kind really.

2. The system itself is supposed to be based on 'pressure points'. Given the firearms I am assuming the rifles are in fact not really loaded and the end of the rifle is used to trigger the pressure points

3. Its the most effective and realistic system for self protection, that really works. (how was this evaluated)

I am putting together a web site at the moment,Iand amlooking for ideas and inspiration. I might have to say, that my system works better than the most realistic system that really works.

Oh there is a video, to me its typical of all 'pressure point systems I have seen, one person stands there and gets hit and then falls down, there is no use of the material under any type of realistic (any at all) pressure. I certainly didnt see any use of rifles in the video to effect pressure points.

So, what are peoples thoughts on this type of advertising. It puts me off straight away.

Does this form of advertising work and should I use this form of advertising when making my web site.

Has any one come across this group before and learned from them?

If so would you be willing to allow for some form of testing, so we can see what it is really like? I want to see if it can be used under pressure with someone actually taking a swing or stabbing at the person using the advertised skill set.

Do we have the right to call people out if they make claims of this nature?

Do I have to study shotokan kata, as its all in the kata ? :D (sorry Magpie, couldnt resist that one)

The guy they are under is Russell Stutely who is a student of the dragon society guys, Rick Moneymaker (this is his real name) and Tom Muncy who in turn were students of the esteemed George Dillpickle. So in essence this stuff is no different to the Dilman stuff. Russel Stutely has some vids on you tube himself and it is all the same to me. The only issue with the whole 'most effective form of self defense in the world' thing is that so many people use it it becomes a little redundant and at the end of the day they may get some students in but one day one of these peoples students are going to get hurt or killed and they will pretty soon be outed as hogwash. However these kind of arts seem to attract lazy people who want an easy solution and there are more lazy people in the world than not so I guess keeping ones integrity and maintaining students is a difficult balancing act.

It's just a bunch of hogwash to do with alternately conencting and disconnecting the Governer and conception vessels. Maybe in acupuncture it has some relevence but that crap has no place in martial arts in my opinion, however this is more about the taekwonjitsu advertising so I don't think it should be taken over with the relelvance of PP in MA.

One thing about advertising martial arts in the way they have is that no matter what you say if someone walks in your door with no prior knowledge they can be sold your product however if they walk into another school and ask about your best in the world self defense they will be told it is not true. The internet is a wonderful research tool for looking up martial arts histories and links. I think it is all in aligning yourself with good people and having integrity, the martial arts is a very small community so the general public is pretty ignorant as to what is good and bad. The risk for them at Taekwonjitsu is doing what they do with regards to pressure points with no pressure testing is that no person really looking to pressure test will not stay there too long as it soon reveals itself as a dog and pony show.

Ha! Same problem....

I am just about to launch an ad campaign in my area as I am in the middle of upgrading to a bigger and better gym facility. I am going to Aussie Disposals to buy some ex-army gear and do some photos, hahaha.

Unfortunately some people have no ethics when it comes to attracting potential students, and we can only hope when they see through the crap, they haven't been jaded too much so they don't look elsewhere for a better gym.
