Recent Sumo Championship article

Here's a couple of pieces from Fairfax regarding the recent Sumo Championships which Joe competed in over the w/e.

With the Olympics fast approaching, the eyes of our sports-loving nation are focused firmly on track and field, which allowed a landmark moment to pass virtually unreported early this week, when the 2012 Australian Sumo Championships were held at the Broadbeach PCYC on the Gold Coast. And after 31 athletes competed across 10 age and weight divisions, who is our new heavyweight champion? That would be Derek Boyer, aka the Gladiator formerly known as Thunder, 15 times undefeated Australia's Strongest Man and multiple world record holder. The open class (anyone can compete, regardless of weight category) was won by Masakatsu Ishiura, a 22-year-old Japanese student spending his gap year in Australia. He and Derek tried an exhibition bout after their respective victories, with Masa (as he is known) winning despite a 30-plus kilo weight disadvantage. ''Just goes to prove,'' Australian Sumo Federation president Katrina Watts said, ''that size isn't everything.''
