Eskrima (also called arnis or kali) is a weaponry-focused system based on principles of flowing movement, economy of motion and adaptability. The Doce Pares Academy is a branch of the Philippines-based group based in Cebu.
The $1520 scholarship covers membership, training fees (two classes a week), uniform and equipment, as well as fees for seminars, tournaments and gradings.
Doce Pares Academy spokesman Vela Georgiev said the scholarship offer is in keeping with Doce Pares tradition. “A fundamental ethos of Doce Pares is to give back to the community,” he said. “For several years, Doce Pares Martial Arts Academy has been involved with a Philippines-based scholarship program supporting the education of youth through eskrima.” The scholarship is open to males and females aged 15 years or older, who will be studying full-time at either high school, university or TAFE during 2012.
