After a few years of taekwondo training, Henry Akins began to wonder if what all his high school friends were doing — wrestling, as is the way in Oklahoma, USA — was a more effective form of fighting. Then someone showed him some fuzzy videos of the Gracie family fighting in no-holds-barred challenge matches. And before the inaugural UFC, before Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructors began a stampede into the United States to capitalise on the boom created by Royce Gracie’s notorious victories, the 18-year-old Akins was already on his way to Rickson Gracie’s academy in Los Angeles. During a recent visit to Melbourne, Akins chatted to Ben Stone about what he’s learned as a student of the man widely regarded as the toughest and most technical of the famous Gracie brothers.

She moved to the United States to train at Rigan Machado’s Academy before being the only girl ever invited to train full-time at the Rickson Gracie Academy. Now the reigning No-gi BJJ World Champ and training at world-renowned Robert Drysdale’s school In Las Vegas, she’s come a long way.

Since taking the reins at the academy established by his late father, Carlson Gracie, BJJ master Carlson Gracie Jr has been very busy. Atop his to-do list are the reunification of the famous Carlson Gracie Team and the establishment of the Carlson Gracie Federation. During his recent visit Down Under, Gracie Jr spoke to Blitz about his father’s influence on Jiu-Jitsu and on him, his own experiences teaching as head of the Carlson Gracie team and his planned journey back to the top of the grappling game.
