There’s a knock at the door. A man is standing there and he’s holding the most recent issue of Black Belt magazine. He doesn’t say anything. He doesn’t need to. He just points to the words on the cover: “Gracie Jiu-Jitsu vs The World! Are you up to the challenge?” Pedro Sauer lets in the stranger. Sauer’s English still isn’t good — he has only been in America for a few years. He dials a number and Rorion Gracie picks up the phone. Someone else has come to fight, he tells Gracie. Gracie asks to speak to the challenger and Sauer passes the phone over. There is a conversation and Sauer waits patiently. After a few minutes, the man hands the phone back to him. On the phone, Rorion Gracie says in Portuguese, “Pedrinho, go ahead and just fight this guy, there’s no money involved. Beat him up.”

An hour-and-a-half drive from Rio de Janeiro, nestled in the mountains, is a town known for creating legends. Known for its stunning views and natural landscape, Teresopolis is famous throughout the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community for the great names of the past. The Gracie and Machado families are often spoken of in the same breath as the mountainside town, but today a new name can be heard among the legends: Robson Moura. A multiple-time BJJ world champion, Moura recently visited Australia to impart some of his submission prowess. He spoke to Danny Tran about his martial art journey and gave some advice for aspiring grapplers.
